Athens’ McCollister racks up 20 points in win over Mabank

MABANK–The Athens Lady Hornets got a huge offensive effort from Mimi McCollister in a big district-opening win over the Mabank Lady Panthers Jan. 10 on the road.
The Lady Hornets got on the board first, courtesy of a three-pointer from McCollister.
The Lady Panthers battled back to close the gap as they still trailed 6-4 early in the first quarter.
Karlie Cook added another three-pointer for Athens to increase their lead to 9-4, leading to a Mabank timeout with 5:28 left in the first quarter.
Laney Davenport added an offensive rebound for the Lady Panthers before a McCollister layup led to a 6-0 run for the Lady Hornets as they took a 19-8 lead into the second quarter.
Two early free throws in the second quarter from Madison Reneau and Drew Neighbors made it a 21-10 game.
A layup from Janessa Kiser and a three-pointer from McCollister wrapped up a 9-0 run from Athens as they sat in front 30-10 at halftime.
Mabank began the second half with two free throws from Carley Sapp and a three-pointer from Lauren Carter to train the Athens’ lead to 30-15.
Bre’nya Barker’s offensive rebound began a 10-2 run to wrap up the third quarter for the Lady Hornets as they led Mabank 40-17 heading to the fourth quarter.
Karlie Cook and Hallie Williams added back-to-back layups to begin the fourth quarter for Athens as they increased their lead to 44-17, leading to a Mabank timeout with just 1:08 into the final quarter.
Mabank would get a late three-point shot from Sapp and ended the game on a 14-8 run, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Hornets picked up the victory in their district opener over the Lady Panthers, 50-31.
Sapp led the way with eight points for Mabank, followed by Carter who added seven points and Neighbors who had six points in the loss to Athens.
McCollister’s impressive 20-point output sent Athens over the top on Friday against Mabank.
Athens also got a double-digit effort from Cook, who added 11 points in the win for the Lady Hornets.
The loss drops the Lady Panthers to 16-9 overall and 0-1 to begin district play. Mabank returns to action Friday, Jan. 17 on the road against the Canton Eaglettes with tipoff set for 6:15 p.m.
The win takes the Lady Hornets to 15-7 overall and 1-0 to start their district schedule. Athens takes on the Van Lady Vandals next Jan. 17 on the road with tipoff scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
