Lady Panthers clawed by Lady Wildcats

Mabank falls in three straight sets to Scurry-Rosser

MABANK–The Mabank Lady Panthers battled against the Scurry-Rosser Lady Wildcats Aug. 20 at home.
The two teams began the first set locked in a battle as they sat tied 2-2 early. The Lady Wildcats then jumped out in front 5-3 before another 4-1 run put them up 9-4, forcing the first Mabank timeout of the night.
The Lady Panthers began battling back with a block from Jasmine Turner that cut Scurry-Rosser’s lead to 11-8. A kill from Kallie Beasley made it 15-11 before Mabank cut the lead to 16-14. A double block at the net from Landi Ross and Brooke Smith made it a 16-15 game as the Lady Panthers trimmed the deficit to one.
A 6-3 run from Scurry-Rosser put some distance between the two teams as they made it a 22-18 game as Mabank took one final timeout. The Lady Wildcats finished off the set with a 25-18 victory.
Mabank came out of the gate hot in the second set as they took an early 5-1 lead, forcing Scurry-Rosser’s first timeout of the night. An ace from Sam Fiore increased the Mabank lead to 7-1.
Ross had another tip at the net to make it an 11-7 game with Scurry-Rosser trimming the deficit midway through the second set. The Lady Wildcats cut the deficit to 19-16, forcing another Mabank timeout.
Mabank had to take another timeout as the Lady Wildcats finally battled back to tie the set 21-21. Scurry-Rosser finished off the comeback with multiple aces in the final few series to take the second set by a slim margin of 25-22.
After falling behind 2-1 early in the third set, Mabank’s Drew Neighbors delivered a kill to tie the set 3-3.
An error from Scurry-Rosser put the Lady Panthers back in front 5-4. A few aces from the Lady Wildcats made it an 8-5 game in favor of Scurry-Rosser, leading to a Mabank timeout. Another kill from Neighbors cut the Mabank deficit to four. Lexie Winklevoss delivered a kill to make it a 15-14 game. The Lady Panthers added another point to tie the set 15-15 to force a Scurry-Rosser timeout.
A 6-1 run out of the timeout by the Lady Wildcats put them in front of the Lady Panthers 21-16. A 4-3 run ended the third set 25-19 in favor of Scurry-Rosser as Mabank fell three sets to none.
The loss drops the Lady Panthers to .500 on the season as they sit at 8-8 overall.
Mabank returns to the court with a doubleheader Tuesday, Aug. 27 in Bullard as they take on Bullard and Alba with games beginning at 4:30 p.m.
