Mabank tops Rusk with fourth quarter surge
MABANK–The Mabank Lady Panthers completed their fourth quarter comeback to defeat the Rusk Eagles Dec. 3 at home.
Lauren Carter got the Lady Panthers on the board first as they took an early 2-0 lead.
After holding a 5-3 lead early in the first quarter, the Eagles stormed back to tie the game 7-7.
Carter hit a late free throw for the Lady Panthers as they trailed 9-8 after the first eight minutes of play.
An early layup from Hannah Brady put Mabank back in front 10-9 for a short time before Rusk controlled the second quarter.
A 10-4 run through the remainder of the first half gave the Eagles a 19-14 lead over the Lady Panthers heading into halftime.
After the Eagles started the third quarter on a 4-0 run, the Lady Panthers called an early timeout to try and regather some momentum and get their team headed in the right direction.
Two late three-pointers from Carter and Drew Neighbors trimmed the lead to 26-22, leading to a Rusk timeout with 3:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Two more shots late in the quarter from Carter and Neighbors made it a one-point game as the Lady Panthers trailed 27-26 entering the fourth quarter.
Halle Partridge hit back-to-back three-point shots to open the fourth quarter as the Lady Panthers jumped in front, 32-27.
Another successful two-point jumper from Madison Reneau put Mabank ahead 36-33 as the Lady Panthers took a timeout to strategize their defensive structure entering the final minutes.
Reneau hit a late layup on a breakout pass to wrap up the win for the Lady Panthers as they topped the Eagles 40-33.
Carter led the way for the Lady Panthers as she racked up 13 points against the Eagles.
Laney Davenport added eight points with Reneau and Partridge notching six points apiece in the win.
The win moves the Lady Panthers to 4-1 early in the season. Mabank returns to action Tuesday, Dec. 10 on the road against the Kaufman Lady Lions at 6:15 p.m.
