Lady Panthers pick up first district win

MABANK–The Mabank Lady Panthers picked up their first district victory of the season with a big win over the Van Lady Vandals Oct. 8 at home.
The first set for the Lady Panthers began with a kill from Jasmine Turner to put Mabank up 2-1 early.
Van battled back to take a 7-6 lead before Mabank took a timeout trailing 15-9 late in the first set.
A kill from Landi Ross made it a 21-19 game after a 10-6 run from the Lady Panthers, forcing the first Van timeout of the night.
Coming out of the timeout, the Lady Panthers tied the game 21-21 on an ace from Laura Dyer before taking the lead on a block from Ross.
Mabank junior Drew Neighbors finished off the set victory for the Lady Panthers with a kill as Mabank edged out the Lady Vandals, 26-24.
The second set turned out to be another close as the teams battled to an 8-8 tie after a kill from Mabank’s Sam Fiore. Mabank pushed in front 10-8, forcing a Lady Vandals timeout.
After falling behind 20-19 to Van late, two straight points, including an ace from Neighbors put the Lady Panthers back in front 21-20.
A tip from Fiore put Mabank into the win column again as they took the second set by a final score of 25-23 to take a 2-0 set lead.
Mabank fell behind early in the third set as Van jumped out to a 9-6 lead before battling back to go in front 13-11.
The Lady Vandals then rattled off the next four points to move in front of Mabank 15-13. The Lady Panthers managed just two more points as they fell to Van 25-15 in the third set.
Mabank and Van battled it out in the fourth set as the Lady Panthers held a slim lead 8-7. A tip from Lexi Winklevoss put Mabank up 10-8, leading to a Van timeout.
Despite a late timeout by the Lady Panthers, still leading 18-14 over Van, the Lady Panthers allowed just one more point down the stretch with Mabank finishing off Van 25-15 to win three sets to one, claiming their first district win of 2019.
The win moves Mabank to 16-20 overall on the season and 1-2 to begin district play.
The Lady Panthers return to action Tuesday, Oct. 15 on the road at 5 p.m. against the Canton Eaglettes.
