Lady Panthers stumble against Bearettes

MABANK–The Mabank Lady Panthers fell at home against the Brownsboro Bearettes in their district contest Jan. 18.

The Lady Bearettes jumped out quickly with a three-point shot to go ahead 3-0 early.

Halle Partridge responded with a three-pointer of her own to tie the score 3-3 in the first quarter.

Another three-point shot from Brianna Martin would be the final points of the first quarter for the Lady Panthers as the Bearettes finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 12-6 after the first eight minutes.

The Bearettes began the second quarter on a 5-0 run before Martin responded with a layup a few minutes into the quarter to make it a 17-8 game.

A quick pass up to Drew Neighbors, followed by a layup cut the deficit to 17-10.

The final points of the quarter came on a steal and layup from Partridge as the Lady Panthers trailed 19-12 at halftime.

After the Bearettes opened the scoring in the second half, Martin responded with a shot on an inbound pass from Neighbors to make it a 21-14 game.

The Lady Panthers were forced to call their first timeout of the second half with 1:15 left after a 6-0 run made it a 27-14 game in the third quarter.

Martin added one final drive and a layup for the Lady Panthers to make it a 27-16 game.

Martin finished the third quarter with a block at the buzzer as Mabank trailed 29-16 heading into the fourth quarter.

Partridge picked up the first basket in the fourth quarter to cut Mabank’s deficit to 29-18.

A 7-2 run put the Bearettes ahead 36-20 before Martin knocked down two free throws to make it 36-22.

Partridge added two more points off an offensive rebound to make it 40-24.

The Bearettes finished the game on a 7-0 run as the Lady Panthers fell 47-24 in their district matchup with Brownsboro.

Martin led the way offensively for the Lady Panthers with 11 points in the loss.

Partridge finished not far behind as she added nine points against the Bearettes.

The loss drops Mabank to 3-11 overall and 1-4 in district play as they sit in fifth place on the outside looking in of the playoff picture.

The Lady Panthers return to the court Jan. 25 at home against the Van Lady Vandals (2-1) on Junior High Night at Mabank High School with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m.
