MABANK–The Mabank Lady Panthers varsity basketball team opened the home portion of their 2019-20 season with a victory over the Rains Lady Wildcats Nov. 19.
Madison Reneau opened the scoring for the Lady Panthers with a three-point shot to put Mabank ahead 3-0 early over Rains.
Lauren Carter added another three-pointer for Mabank to increase their lead to 6-2. Lainey Kirkland bookended a 9-2 run for Mabank with a three-point shot of her own as the Lady Panthers dominated the first quarter of action, taking a 15-6 lead into the second quarter.
After an early basket by Rains and a timeout from Mabank, the Lady Panthers added their first points of the second quarter on a layup from Drew Neighbors to make it a 17-8 game.
The Lady Panthers managed just two more points the rest of the half as Rains ended on a 5-2 run as the Lady Wildcats trailed 19-13 at halftime.
After a stagnant beginning to the second half for both teams on offense, Laney Davenport put in the first points of the third quarter for Mabank off an inbound pass to make it 21-13 in favor of the Lady Panthers.
After a three-pointer from Halle Partridge increased the Mabank lead to 24-10, Rains responded with a full-court press defense, turning that into five straight points to tie the game 24-24.
A late three-point shot from Carley Sapp gave Mabank a slim 27-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Mabank began the fourth quarter by scoring the first five points, including another three-pointer from Carter to give the Lady Panthers a 32-24 lead.
A 6-1 run from the Lady Wildcats trimmed the deficit to 33-30 halfway through the fourth quarter.
A late layup from Neighbors and two crucial free throws from Carter after a Rains’ intentional foul sealed the 42-37 victory for the Lady Panthers in their home opener.
The offense was spread evenly throughout the Mabank lineup. Carter led the way with 10 points for Mabank, followed closely by Sapp, who notched nine points against Rains.
Mabank also received seven points from Davenport and six points from Neighbors in their win Tuesday night.
The Lady Panthers return to action Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 26 as they take on Palestine with tipoff for varsity set for 2:30 p.m.
