KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats boys’ basketball team saw a manageable deficit grow larger just before halftime Jan. 21, after which the LaPoynor Flyers broke open the game in the second half to seize a 100-55 district win.
LaPoynor, which is ranked No. 11 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ Jan. 24 Class 2A poll, broke an early scoreless streak when the Flyers’ Kase Johnston hit two free throws with 5:18 left in the first period. Bryce Lincoln’s layup put Kerens on the board but the Bobcats fell behind 24-10 entering the second period.
AJ Stevens of Kerens hit a three-pointer with 4:38 left before halftime to get the Bobcats within 32-21 and Hunter Crawford’s free throw and an Antonio McAdams basket got Kerens closer at 36-24. LaPoynor then took a 43-26 halftime lead.
A Lane Lynch three-pointer and buckets by Stevens, Nehemiah Massey and Mykel Lattimore highlighted Kerens’ second-half efforts to upset the six-time state champions. The Kerens girls’ basketball game that night against LaPoynor was cancelled because of COVID concerns.
McAdams and Muziq Gunnell led Kerens with 10 points each, followed by Lattimore with nine points (six of which came in the fourth period), Crawford with seven points, Bryce Lincoln and Massey with six points apiece, Stevens with four points and Lynch with three points.
