KERENS – A two-point conversion with 15 seconds left in the game lifted the Mildred Eagles past the Kerens Bobcats Sept. 11, giving the Eagles an 8-7 victory over their nearby Navarro County rivals.
Kerens fell to 1-2 on the season, after losing Sept. 4 at Blooming Grove, 20-0. The Bobcats travel Sept. 18 to take on Rice, which is winless in 2020.
After a Kerens punt attempt with 2:23 left in the game that turned the ball over to Mildred on downs – which was then backed up because of an Eagle personal foul – Mildred marched 56 yards for a touchdown.
That final Mildred drive was capped off by a two-yard quarterback keeper by Daniel Ayers, which cut into Kerens’ 7-0 lead before the game-clinching two-point conversion, which came when Samuel Bustos of Mildred took the direct snap and sneaked across the goal line.
Mildred had threatened to tie the game with 2:05 remaining in the third quarter, but Bobcat defensive back Jaylon Harris swatted away a fourth-down pass, which gave Kerens the ball on downs on their own 14-yard line.
Kerens scored its touchdown with 3:37 left before halftime, when quarterback Brayden May found Damarya Baxter on fourth-and-one for a 56-yard catch-and-run. The Kerens defense had stopped Mildred on fourth down on the Bobcat three-yard line with 11:10 left in the second quarter.
