GUN BARREL CITY–Rene Alonzo, a Gun Barrel City employee for 20 years, passed away Dec. 29 following a long battle with COVID-19.
Alonzo was a loving husband and father who is survived by his wife of 18 years, Debbie. Alonzo loved and cared dearly for the five minor children he and Debbie raise. He and his wife recently purchased their forever home and was particularly proud to have accomplished this goal. Alonzo was a veteran and a proud United States Marine who served his country honorably.
Alonzo worked for the City of Gun Barrel City for 20 years as the Animal Control Officer where he was committed to providing services for the citizens. He was the second longest tenured city employee and took great pride in his work as a loyal employee. Rene had many friends that he worked with throughout his years with the city and the news of his passing has saddened the entire city staff.
In a Facebook post, the city stated that, “The unexpected loss of Rene has devastated his family and friends and he will be missed dearly.” Cash donations are being accepted at the Gun Barrel City Police Department and will go directly to the family to help with unexpected medical costs and support of Debbie and their five children.
Alonzo’s wife Debbie stated in a Facebook post, “A special thank you to Chief Jeff Norris for all of this and for checking on us daily...all that was apart of this beautiful message and memorial.” She continued stating, “Y’all are all truly amazing and I’m so glad y’all loved him as much as I did and all the babies do. They truly miss him already and we just wanted him to come home, but God decided a long time ago when he would return to heaven...Thank you to everyone that has had any part of his life,” she concluded.
To date, nearly $2,000 has been raised of the $5,000 fundraising goal via
