MABANK–The Mabank Lady Panthers lost a tough battle against the Scurry-Rosser Lady Wildcats Aug. 24 at home.
Mabank fought down to the wire in the first and third sets but fell in a three-set sweep to Scurry-Rosser.
The Lady Panthers came out of the gate strong in the first set as they took an early 4-1 lead on a kill from Savannah Wagner and an ace from junior Ashlyn Thompson.
After Scurry battled back to tie the set 6-6, Mabank pushed back in front 11-6, forcing a Lady Wildcats’ timeout.
Mabank inched closer to victory late in the first set as they led 21-15 before the teams sat tied 24-24 after a surge from Scurry.
The Lady Wildcats got the late kill shot as they topped the Lady Panthers 27-25 to take the first set.
Scurry took a note out of the Mabank playbook as they stormed out in front 10-3 in the second set, leading to a Mabank timeout.
A late kill from Pamela Ruiz closed the gap for Mabank to 18-10 but the Lady Panthers couldn’t string together a strong run as the Lady Wildcats dominated the second set, 25-12.
The third set saw an all-out battle late between the two squads as they traded set points multiple times with the two teams tied 21-21.
After sitting tied 27-27 after each team had multiple chances to close out the set, Scurry delivered the final dagger, completing the sweep of Mabank with a 29-27 set victory.
