Mabank defeats Athens in four sets

Lady Panthers register sixth district win

ATHENS–The Mabank Lady Panthers took down the Athens Lady Hornets in four sets on the road Oct. 16.
The win was the sixth district win of the season and the 11th overall for Mabank as they sit at 11-7 with a 6-2 district record. The win keeps Mabank in second place in the 4A Region II, District 14 standings, just behind the 6-1 Van Lady Vandals, who sit in first place. 
After the Lady Panthers picked up the first two points of the opening set, the Lady Hornets rattled off seven of the next eight points to take a 7-3 lead. A 5-0 run put Mabank back in front, 8-7, forcing an Athens timeout. 
Athens scored just 10 more points as the Lady Panthers took the first set 25-17. 
After the two teams sat tied 6-6 early in the second set, a 12-2 run from the Lady Panthers increased their lead to 18-8. 
Athens managed just three more points as Mabank took the second set, 25-11.
The Lady Hornets battled from behind in the third set to take down the Lady Panthers 25-20 entering the fourth set.
The Lady Panthers topped the Lady Hornets in the fourth set, 25-17, to defeat Athens three sets to one.
District certification for volleyball is Oct. 27, determining who qualifies for the postseason in 2020.
