WILLS POINT–The Mabank Panthers’ season came to an end at the hands of the Kaufman Lions Feb. 22 at Wills Point High School.
The Lions used a strong second half to pull away from the Panthers as they topped Mabank 65-36 to advance to the Area round.
The Lions jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before Sean Henry got the Panthers on the board. Kaufman rattled off another five points before Cade Wilson knocked down a three-pointer to make it an 13-7 game.
Wilson added another layup with Jordan Flores adding four points to make it 18-15. A technical after a basket from the Lions sent Henry to the free throw line where he went 1/2 to make it 22-16.
Kiunn Jackson added the final basket of the first half for the Panthers as they trailed the Lions, 28-22, heading into halftime.
A basket from Wilson to begin the second half trimmed the Lions’ lead to the smallest of the night as Mabank trailed 28-24.
The Lions followed that with an 8-0 run before an offensive rebound by Hagen Tijerina snapped that streak.
Flores would add the only two points for Mabank throughout the rest of the third quarter as they sat behind 43-28 entering the fourth quarter.
The Lions would put some distance between themselves and the Panthers with a 13-0 run before a Jackson basket made it 56-30. Henry added a free throw with Wilson notching an offensive rebound.
Henry added the final basket of the season for Mabank on a three-point shot off the glass as they fell 65-36.
Wilson led the way offensively for the Panthers with 11 points against the Lions.
Flores added eight points, Henry notched seven points, Jackson added six points and Tijerina rounded out the scoring with four points.
Mabank wraps up the 2021-22 season at 13-16 overall and as Bi-district finalists.
