Mabank girls fall in OT to Canton

MABANK–The Mabank Lady Panthers dropped their district home game to the Canton Eaglettes Jan. 28.
The Lady Panthers found themselves in foul trouble throughout the game and fell in overtime to the Eaglettes, 61-51.
Carley Sapp led off the game with a three-pointer, followed by two free throws from Savannah Wagner to put Mabank ahead 5-0.
Sapp then hit two more three-point shots to begin the night 3/3 beyond the arc as the Lady Panthers forced a timeout from Canton, leading 11-3.
The Lady Panthers wrapped up the first quarter on an 8-3 run to take a 19-6 lead into the second quarter.
The Eaglettes rebounded in the second quarter, outscoring Mabank 10-7, with the Lady Panthers still leading 26-16 at halftime.
The Lady Panthers struggled against the Eaglettes’ defense in the second half as the third quarter belonged to Canton as they outscored Mabank 14-4, leaving the two teams tied 30-30 entering the fourth quarter.
With Mabank leading 47-45 late, an inbound pass from Canton pushed their offense up the court with the Eaglettes hitting a layup at the buzzer to tie the game, sending it to overtime.
Lauren Carter managed the lone four points in the few minutes of overtime for the Lady Panthers on four free throws before fouling out with 23 seconds remaining as Mabank fell after being outscored 14-4 in overtime.
Wagner led the Lady Panthers with 16 points in the overtime loss to Canton.
Sapp added 14 points with Carter notching 12 points for the Lady Panthers.
The loss drops Mabank to 22-9 overall on the season and 3-4 in district play.
