Panthers pick up first district win over Quinlan
MABANK–The Mabank Panthers picked up their first district win of the season Oct. 18 at home over the Quinlan Panthers.
In the first quarter, both team’s defenses proved too stingy as the first 12 minutes went scoreless between Mabank and Quinlan.
Mabank senior running back Dakota Shaw put up the first points of the night as he finished off a nine-yard run to put Mabank ahead 7-0 in the first two minutes of the second quarter.
Mabank’s defense came up with a huge stop late as they stopped Quinlan on a 4th-and-1 from their own 24-yard line to take over on down with 3:10 remaining in the first half.
The very next play, Mabank running back Marcus Puritt picked up 26 yards to move Mabank to midfield.
Just a few plays later, Puritt once again tacked on a long run as they took the ball 46 yards to the Quinlan four-yard line.
Shaw finished off the drive with a four-yard touchdown to give Mabank a 14-0 lead with 1:18 remaining in the second quarter.
The defense pitched in on the offense as senior defensive back Jacob Mcray intercepted a Quinlan pass and ran the ball back 54 yards into the end zone for a touchdown to put Mabank ahead 21-0 at halftime.
Mabank defensive back Landry Johnson added another interception as he fell and made the catch on his back at midfield in the fourth quarter as the Panthers shutout Quinlan, 21-0.
The win moves Mabank to 6-1 overall and 1-1 to begin district play. The Panthers get back in action Oct. 25 on the road against the Waxahachie Life Mustangs (5-2, 1-1 district)
Kickoff for the district contest is set for 7:30 p.m.
