MALAKOFF–March 18, the defending Class 3A state champion Malakoff Tigers baseball team defeated the Scurry-Rosser Wildcats, 12-4, to start at 2-0 in District 18-3A play.
In the first inning, Malakoff shortstop Mike Jones drove in left fielder Corey Phillips for the Tigers’ first run. Kannon Poteete slapped a single to centerfield to score Jones (2-1, Malakoff), followed by a Ryder Rogers double. With the bases loaded, first baseman Judd McNaughton drilled a single to left field, scoring two Malakoff runs.
Now leading 4-1, Malakoff added another run in the bottom of the second inning with a Corey Phillips fielder’s choice that scored second baseman Judd Driskell. Scurry-Rosser cut into Malakoff’s 5-1 lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Leading 5-3, a Driskell fielder’s choice drove in center fielder Kaiden Holyfield. Up 6-3, the designated hitter, Rogers, reached base in the bottom of the fifth inning on a hit-by-pitch and eventually came around the bases to score on an errant Wildcat throw-out attempt.
With Malakoff winning 7-3, Asa Mondragon relieved Tiger starting pitcher Cam Norris with the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Mondragon coaxed a pop-up to shortstop Jones to end the threat.
Malakoff scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Wildcats added one run in the top of the seventh inning before Malakoff shut down Scurry-Rosser for their 12-4 win.
