Tigers set for Black Friday showdown with West
SULPHUR SPRINGS–The Malakoff Tigers blanked the Pottsboro Cardinals in the Area round of the UIL State playoffs Nov. 18 in Sulphur Springs.
The Tigers completed their second straight shutout in the postseason with a big 42-0 win over the Cardinals to advance to the Regional semifinals.
Jason Tennyson got the Tigers on board in the first quarter on a 33-yard run to give Malakoff a 7-0 lead.
Corey Phillips added another rushing touchdown for the Tigers just three minutes later to increase their lead to 14-0.
Duce Hart added the final score of the first quarter on a three-yard run to give Malakoff a commanding 21-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Hart added his second touchdown of the game against the Cardinals on a seven-yard run with eight minutes remaining in the first half, increasing the Tigers lead to 28-0.
The Tigers had two interceptions late in the second quarter but couldn’t convert those turnovers into points as they missed a late field goal.
Hart continued his impressive performance with his third touchdown of the night with a seven-yard rushing score to make it 35-0 in favor of Malakoff.
Zack Studley added the final score of the game for the Tigers in the fourth quarter as they cruised to a 42-0 Area round victory over the Cardinals.
Judson Driskell finished 10/18 for 139 passing yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers.
Hart finished his night with 18 carries for 121 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Pottsboro.
Tennyson added six carries for 91 yards and one touchdown Thursday night.
Malakoff (9-3) advances to the Regional semifinals against the West Trojans (12-0) at E.H. Hanby Stadium in Mesquite at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 26.
