MALAKOFF–The Malakoff Tigers baseball team, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, joined their softball classmates March 23 in remaining undefeated in district play, both ending things early against Palmer in adjacent action.
Malakoff baseball (3-0 in district) got started with a Brandon Nations two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, fueled further in the second inning by a Cole Gaddis bases-loaded hit-by-pitch that brought in a third run.
Wes Hustead doubled in the fourth inning, then was singled home by Bryson Adair, who later scored on an overthrow. In the fifth, Riggin Smith (the Tigers’ starting pitcher) and Jack Davis extended the Malakoff lead to 7-0 with RBI singles. Erik Waldo’s RBI double accounted for an 8-0 lead.
Judson Driskell relieved Smith in the sixth, ending a Palmer scoring threat. Adair hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning and Nations doubled in Cole Gaddis for the 10-run shutout.
The Lady Tigers (5-0 in district) entered the bottom of the sixth leading 8-4 over Palmer, led by 11 strikeouts from pitcher Ariel Posey. The eighth Lady Tiger run came on a Posey RBI triple.
Malakoff exploded for six runs in their half of the final inning, featuring a Cam Gaddis RBI double and a Katie Crews two-run homer.
Later, Emily Spiva was walked in with the bases loaded to give her team a 13-4 lead, then an Addison Wittram sacrifice fly scored Bailey Riley, ending the contest at 14-4.
