Mabank shuts out Wills Point, moves to 2-1
MABANK–The Mabank Panthers put on an offensive and defensive clinic Sept. 11 at home as they shut out the Wills Point Tigers 42-0.
The Panthers put up 21 points in both the first and second half while allowing just five first downs to the Tigers in the win.
Mabank got the scoring started late in the first quarter on a short one-yard rushing touchdown from freshman JJ Flores to put the Panthers ahead 7-0 with 3:31 remaining.
Though it looked like Marcus Pruitt drove in the second touchdown of the night for the Panthers, it was negated by a 15-yard penalty to move Mabank back to the 17-yard line. Mabank two more consecutive penalties to push them back to the 32-yard line on an offensive hold and a false start.
The arm of Mabank quarterback Dahltyn McKinnley would make up for it as he connected with Landry Johnson on an athletic 24-yard touchdown grab to increase the Panthers’ lead to 14-0.
A 31-yard catch late in the second quarter by Johnson set up the Panthers on a first-and-goal situation. Pruitt would deliver his first touchdown of the night shortly after on a one-yard run to put the Panthers up 21-0 at halftime.
Mabank added a 17-yard, two-yard and eight-yard touchdown in the third and fourth quarters to seal the 42-0 win over the Tigers.
Pruitt had 26 carries for the Panthers for 197 total yards and one touchdown. Johnson added two catches for 55 yards and one touchdown against the Tigers.
The Mabank offense was impressive as they were 90 percent on third down conversions as they totaled 21 first downs on the night while holding the Tigers to just five first downs.
The win moves the Panthers to 2-1 to begin the season. Mabank returns to the turf Friday, Sept. 18 against the Canton Eagles on the road at 7:30 p.m.
