Mabank’s season ends against Pleasant Grove
LONGVIEW–The Mabank Panthers season ended in the Area round of the 2019 playoffs against the Pleasant Grove Hawks Feb. 22 at Longview High School.
After falling behind 2-0 to start the game, Caleb Dally tied the score before putting the Panthers ahead on a three-pointer to give Mabank a 5-2 lead in the first quarter.
Gavin Scrimshire and Cade bell added back-to-back baskets to push the Panthers lead to 9-2.
A Devyn Gibbs shot gave Mabank an 11-2 lead and forced Pleasant Grove’s first timeout of the night.
Gibbs added another jump shot and one free throw to increase Mabank’s lead to 14-4 late in the first quarter.
The Hawks added two late points as the Panthers took a 14-6 lead heading into the second quarter.
Bell opened the second quarter for the Panthers with a three-pointer to bump their lead to 17-6 early.
Noah Johnston added his first two points of the night to make it a 21-8 lead for Mabank halfway through the second quarter.
Dally added a late free throw for the Panthers, but a 5-0 run from the Hawks left Pleasant Grove trailing 27-18 heading into halftime.
Dally began the second half with a layup and two free throws for the Panthers to increase their early lead to 31-18 in the third quarter.
Bell added a late free throw for the Panthers, but the Hawks ended the third quarter on an impressive 11-0 to cut the deficit to 36-31 heading into the final eight minutes of regulation.
The Hawks picked up the first four points of the fourth quarter to make it a one-point game before Dally hit a free throw for the first point by Mabank since late in the third quarter.
Pleasant Grove pulled even with a two-point shot to make it a 37-37 game shortly before Scrimshire put the Panthers back in front.
The Hawks answered with a three-pointer to take their first lead since the first basket of the game 40-39.
Dally traded baskets with the Hawks late as the Panthers continued to lead 44-43 late in the fourth quarter.
A late three-pointer from Dally increased their lead to 47-45, but a free throw followed by a three-point shot propelled the Hawks ahead 49-47.
The Hawks wouldn’t relinquish the lead the rest of the contest as the Panthers eventually fell to Pleasant Grove by a final score of 55-51.
Mabank ends their season with an impressive 22-11 overall record, including a District and Bi-district championship in 2019.
