Mabank seals district victory with strong fourth quarter
MABANK–The Mabank Panthers picked up a big district win at home over the Brownsboro Bears Feb. 11.
Cade Bell began the game the right way for the Panthers with an and-1, putting Mabank up 3-0.
Bell added another and-1 in the quarter as the Panthers led 6-5 after the first quarter.
Connor Smith led off the second quarter with a layup for the Panthers, followed by a free throw from Landry Johnson to make it 11-10 Mabank.
The Bears ended the second quarter on an 8-3 run to take an 18-14 lead into halftime over the Panthers
Despite an early basket from Caleb Goforth to begin the third quarter, the Bears took a 25-16 lead, forcing a Mabank timeout with 5:14 remaining in the quarter.
Whatever Mabank Head Coach Tracy Carter said in that timeout must have clicked for the Panthers as they began an offensive run.
It started with a three-pointer from Bell, followed by baskets from Goforth to cut the deficit to 25-23.
A steal and layup from Bell tied the game before a basket from Smith put the Panthers back in front, 27-25, leading to a Brownsboro timeout.
The Panthers and Bears added two more points in the third quarter as Mabank entered the fourth quarter with a 29-27 lead over Brownsboro.
The Bears rattled off five straight points to begin the fourth quarter to regain the lead, 32-29.
Johnson knocked down two straight three-pointers for the Panthers to regain the lead, 35-32.
A layup from Josh German bookended a 12-0 run from Mabank as they led Brownsboro 41-32 late.
Bell added late back-to-back layups for the Panthers to seal a 50-39 district win over the Bears.
Bell led the Panthers with 24 points in the win over the Bears Tuesday night.
Johnson and Smith each added eight points apiece with Devyn Gibbs adding six points for the Panthers.
The win moves the Panthers to 8-16 overall and 3-5 in district play.
Mabank wraps up the 2019-20 regular season as they host their Senior Night Tuesday, Feb. 18 at home against the Van Vandals with tipoff for varsity set for 7:30 p.m.
