Strong third quarter carries Mabank over Athens

MABANK–The Mabank Panthers picked up a huge district win over the Athens Hornets Feb. 14 at home.
The Panthers started off with a layup from Devyn Gibbs and a three-pointer from Cade Bell to take an early 5-0 lead over the Hornets.
Mabank continued their strong start with a 7-1 run as they led Athens 12-1 late in the first quarter.
Connor Smith knocked down a late three-pointer as the Panthers took a 15-5 lead into the second quarter.
Athens’ Rowdy Godwin began the second quarter with an and-1 to close the gap for Athens to 18-7.
Grant Wood added a late basket for the Hornets, but the Panthers led the game 29-13 at halftime.
Bell kicked off the third quarter with another three-point shot for the Panthers to make it 32-15.
Mabank’s Caleb Goforth and Athens’ Connor Woodard traded three-pointers late with Mabank taking a 49-23 lead heading into the final eight minutes of regulation.
The Panthers added 10 points in the final quarter with the Hornets notching 16 points in the fourth quarter with Mabank picking up the 59-39 district victory.
Bell led the way for the Panthers with a 25-point effort against the Hornets.
Smith added 10 points while Goforth added nine points for Mabank Friday night.
Woodard notched 10 points for the Hornets against Mabank.
The loss drops the Hornets to 8-23 overall and 3-6 in district play. Athens wrapped up their regular season schedule with a home contest against Wills Point Tigers.
The win boosts the Panthers to 9-16 overall and 4-5 in district play. Mabank wrapped up their regular season with their Senior night contest against the Van Vandals Feb. 18.
