KERENS–Big-play offense and stout defense allowed the Kerens Bobcats to beat the Cayuga Wildcats Oct. 30 and clinch Kerens' first playoff berth in three seasons on Senior Night.
The Bobcats enter postseason on a two-game win streak that includes an Oct. 23, 31-0 victory at Axtell. Kerens finished the regular season 3-2 in district and 4-6 overall.
Cayuga was driving for a first-quarter touchdown when the Wildcats instead fumbled, recovered in the end zone by Bobcat cornerback Bryn Davis for a touchback.
A series of penalties and a short gain moved the ball to the 46, from which Damarya Baxter took a fourth-down carry 56 yards for the first Kerens touchdown, with 35 seconds left in the opening quarter.
At the 9:35 mark of the second quarter, Jaylene Cumby dashed 58 yards down the middle of the field to give Kerens a 14-0 lead.
The next Cayuga drive, fueled by a 52-yard pass to the Kerens 30, petered out on downs and Kerens drove to the Cayuga 8 before time ran out in the half.
An early second-half Jason Burleson sack set the tone for the Kerens defense the rest of the way. The defense later stopped Cayuga on fourth down near the Kerens 10-yard line and Jaylene Cumby collected two interceptions, one in the end zone and another at the Kerens 16, to hold Cayuga scoreless.
