KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats fell to 1-3 following a 44-0 homecoming loss to the Rice Bulldogs. Kerens traveled to Chilton Sept. 24 before starting District 8-2A play Oct. 8 at home against Dawson.
Rice marched methodically downfield on its first series, capped off with a 4-yard touchdown run with 4:44 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs perfectly executed an onside kick and recovered the ball at midfield, driving for a second touchdown with 15 seconds left in the first quarter on a 17-yard pass. The two-point conversion pass increased the Rice lead to 16-0.
On their next possession, Kerens rolled into Rice territory and moved to the Rice 13-yard line, helped along by a series of penalties, including a roughing the passer call. The Bulldogs stopped Kerens running back Mykel Lattimore for a loss on fourth-and-one with 9:42 before halftime to extinguish that drive.
Next, Rice converted a fourth-and-short and had its own roughing the passer call levied against Kerens but was stopped on fourth-and-eight from their own 46-yard line with 4:42 left in the second quarter. Kerens then moved to the Rice 19-yard line but also was stopped on downs, falling short by five yards with 3:17 left before halftime. Later, Rice scored its third touchdown on a 2-yard run with 1:15 remaining in the first half to lead 23-0.
Early in the second half, a Lattimore kickoff return for a Kerens touchdown was nullified by offsetting penalties. With 6:39 left in the third quarter, Rice converted a fourth down with a 62-yard touchdown run, upping their advantage to 30-0.
The Bulldogs added a 5-yard touchdown run with 2 seconds left in the third quarter, stopped another Kerens drive on fourth down at their own 20-yard line early in the fourth quarter and tacked on a final touchdown with a 1-yard quarterback keeper with 2:46 left in the game.
