MABANK–Mabank’s 16-year-old Riley Thompson has been enduring the American Idol auditions in hopes of becoming the next American Idol.
She made it through solos and group rounds in Hollywood Week and was selected as one of the Top 40 who was sent to Hawaii.
“Hollywood Week is really amazing but stressful, too. It it chaos,” Thompson said.
Thompson’s solo was Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” and for the group round she sang “Meant to Be” by Bebe Rexha. Her group included other young singers from 15 to 17 years old. Thompson said the group stayed up until 2 a.m. preparing for the group audition.
“It is like a dream vacation to go to Hawaii for the next step of auditions,” Thompson said. “All my friends and family are calling or texting me.”
Thompson isn’t new to being on television. Last year, she appeared on an episode of Real Country with judges Shania Twain, Travis Tritt and Jake Owen.
In addition to the stress of Hollywood Week, Thompson has a full school schedule. She said she bonded with the young group she sang with because they were all doing their homework, too.
To watch Thompson and the other Top 40 contestants in Hawaii, tune in Sundays and Mondays on ABC at 7 p.m. Central time.
