MABANK–Saddle up folks, the 66th Annual Mabank rodeo and Western Week is set for June 21-26 at the Alene and Andrew Gibbs Memorial Arena in Mabank.
The week provides visitors the opportunity to be part of the excitement surrounding the rodeo and activities of Western Week. For six days, western themed activities throughout the City of Mabank will engage the young and the old. The Mabank Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) will be sponsoring the rodeo, as in years past. “We attempt to keep our costs down and our gate fees low to accommodate all socioeconomic levels of our community. This is truly a family-oriented community event,” says the Mabank Fire Department Rodeo Committee. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for those under 13 and free for ages five and under.
This event is the MVFD’s biggest fundraiser each year. Along with the rodeo the MVFD has three other events that assist in raising funds for the department which include, a Chili Supper in January, Fish Fry in April and Jubilee in September. The department is a 100% volunteer service that provides fire suppression, rescue, water rescue and basic first responder services to the City of Mabank, parts of Kaufman County, Van Zandt County, Henderson County, northern end of Cedar Creek Lake and Purtis Creek State Park. The Department has 24 professional volunteer firefighters and five cadets that serve approximately 9,000 people in a 125–square mile rural setting. “The department is very proactive with nine Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT-B) and over half of our members are basic fire certified under the Sate Fireman and Fire Marshal Association of Texas (SFFMA),” says the committee.
The western week tradition starts off Monday, June 21, with Queen rehearsal at 7 p.m. at the rodeo arena. Games begin at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 22, with bed races to follow at 7:30 p.m in downtown Mabank along with a street dance.
