Strong fifth inning carries Mabank over Athens

ATHENS–The Mabank Lady Panthers brought the bats to the party as they topped the Athens Lady Hornets on the road to stay undefeated in district play April 5.
The Lady Panthers, after building a 5-0 lead, plated five more runs in the top of the fifth inning as they cruised to an 11-6 win over the Lady Hornets.
Mabank plated the first run of the game in the top of the second before adding another run in the third to take a 2-0 lead as starting pitcher Kai Hudson kept Athens scoreless through the first three frames.
Mabank added a crooked number in the top of the fourth inning as they scratched across three runs to increase their lead to 5-0 over the Lady Hornets.
The Lady Panthers exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth inning as they forced the issue with the Lady Hornets as they needed to score to avoid a 10-0 run-rule loss.
The Lady Hornets found their offense as they plated their first two runs of the game to cut the deficit to 10-2.
Mabank answered with a single run in the top of the sixth inning to increase their lead to 11-2.
The Lady Hornets attempted a comeback in the final frame as they scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but couldn’t scratch across anymore as they fell 11-6.
The Lady Hornets were led by Brooklynn Cook who notched three of the nine Athens’ hits and added two RBIs.
Ashlyn Liles led the Lady Panthers with two hits and two RBIs with Chloe Holland notching two hits as well for Mabank against Athens.
Hudson picked up the win in the circle with a complete game victory, tossing seven innings, surrendering six runs on nine hits while striking out eight batters.
The loss drops Athens to 11-11-1 on the season and 1-5 in district play.
The win continues the undefeated streak for Mabank to begin district play as they sit at 8-0 with a 19-6-1 overall record as they also defeated Van April 8 by a score of 17-3 before defeating Brownsboro at home April 11 by a final of 3-0.
