Tigers dominate, advance to Area round

MALAKOFF, WEST–The Malakoff Tigers showed their dominance over the West Trojans as they breezed their way into the Area round with home-and-home wins May 7-8. 
Malakoff won big 14-4 at home Friday night and finished off West with a 14-2 road victory on their way to the Bi-district championship Saturday afternoon. 
After a scoreless first inning, the Tigers plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. 
Malakoff added three runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead over West to 7-0. 
The Trojans made a push in the top of the fifth inning as they rattled off four runs to cut the Tigers’ lead to 7-4.
The Tigers ended any comeback hopes with three runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth inning to take home a 14-4 win.
Alan Benhardt picked up the win on the mound for the Tigers with 5.2 innings of work, striking out five Trojans.
Bryson Adair and Jack Davis picked up three hits each for the Tigers Friday night. Adair, along with Wes Hustead, added three RBIs each against the Trojans. 
With a chance to close out the series Saturday afternoon, the Tigers left no room for doubt.
They opened game two with four runs in the first inning, adding a single run in the second inning to open a 5-0 lead over West.
After increasing their lead to 7-0 in the third inning, West plated their first two runs to make it a 7-2 game.
With each team going scoreless in the fifth inning, Malakoff put the game away with a seven-run sixth inning, winning 14-2 in five innings.
Benhardt, Hustead and Brandon Nations each notched three hits for the Tigers. Nations led the team with four RBIs with Benhardt and Davis each driving in three runs. 
Nathan Jones got the win for the Tigers with five innings of work, surrendering two runs on three hits, striking out four West batters.
The Tigers improve their overall record to 28-6 and advance to the Area round against Rogers.
Malakoff will face Rogers Friday, May 14 for game one at West High School with first pitch set for 7 p.m. Game two is set for 2 p.m Saturday, May 15 with game three to follow if necessary.
