Grandview tops Malakoff in 3A, Division 1 championship rematch
GRANDVIEW–The Malakoff Tigers dropped their season opener on the road against the Grandview Zebras Aug. 28 in a 2018 3A, Division 1 State championship rematch.
Friday night’s loss was also the first season-opening loss in the 12-year tenure of Head Coach Jamie Driskell during his time at Malakoff. Malakoff’s first loss of the 2019 season also came at the hands of Grandview Sept. 20.
The Tigers’ late comeback with a dominant third quarter forced overtime, where the Zebras scored the lone touchdown for a 31-24 victory.
The Zebras jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter before Malakoff got on the board with a field goal in the second quarter to trim the lead to 10-3.
Grandview responded with another touchdown to make it a 16-3 game entering halftime.
The Tigers added a late rushing touchdown in the final three minutes of the third quarter to make it a one score game as they trailed the Zebras 17-10.
The Zebras scored a crushing touchdown in the final two minutes of the third quarter to extend their lead to 24-10 entering the final 12 minutes of the fourth quarter.
The Tigers responded with an early rushing touchdown to trim the deficit to 24-16. Malakoff found the strength late and they scored on a touchdown pass in the final minute of regulation to the game 24-24 and send the contest to overtime.
Grandview scored the lone touchdown in the extra quarter to take the victory, 31-24 over the Tigers.
After their first season-opening loss since 2007, the Tigers will seek to even up their record Sept. 4 in their home opener against the Van Vandals at 7:30 p.m.
