PAYNE SPRINGS–Vicky Monroy, owner of Vicky’s Barbecue in Payne Springs, has become a well known staple amongst the Cedar Creek Lake community, not only for her food, but for her giving heart every holiday season. For the past five years Vicky has been providing a Christmas Day dinner based on donations only. When asked what made her begin providing the holiday meals she stated, “I saw a need in the community, homeless people and people who were alone on Christmas. It can be a lonely time.” Vicky’s Barbecue has been in business for three and half years but she began providing these meals through Cornerstone Church in Mabank. While most of the meals are provided in house, Vicky does have volunteers that carry out to local fire, police and emergency medical departments around the Cedar Creek Lake area. The volunteers that come to assist Vicky during the holiday are from all over, from churches, and even out of state customers. The donations she receives from this holiday dinner are passed along to the Payne Springs Fire Department. Last year she presented a check to the fire department for over $700. “Its really about getting the homeless here, bringing them together and getting them a hot meal,” Vicky said. Vicky’s Barbecue annual holiday dinner is 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 25 at 13228 Texas Highway 198, Mabank. For more information call (903) 451-5000.
