CORSICANA–Juana Marquez, 42, of Corsicana was arrested Aug. 19 on one count of second degree abandoning or endangering a child. As of Tuesday, Marquez remained in custody with $50,000 bail.
The 4-year-old child, whose name has not been provided, was home alone when she pulled a pot of boiling water off a stove. The young girl was burned on her head, torso and arms.
The woman told police officers she was not in the room when the incident happened and didn’t call 9-1-1 until 12 hours later. Marquez never sought medical treatment for the girl, instead attempting to treat the girl herself.
First responders pronounced the child dead at the scene.
After examination by the coroner, it was determined the young girl died from her injuries sustained from the boiling water.
After interviewing the residents of the home, police obtained an arrest warrant for Marquez.
Marquez is believed to be the young girl’s stepmother.
