Lady Jackets fend off Arp for 1-run win

KEMP–On the softball diamond, the Kemp Lady Jackets hosted the Arp Lady Tigers for a non-district match Feb. 27, winning 11-10.
Arp struck first in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to lead 1-0. In the bottom of the second, after a leadoff triple by Brooklin Gibbons and a walk by Brooke Cole, the Lady Jackets got on the board, 1-1, when Gibbons scored on an RBI groundout by Katie Neighbors. Kemp took a 2-1 lead after Cole came home on a failed strikeout.
The Lady Tigers responded and took a 3-2 lead after a throwing error and an inside-the-park home run in the top of the third.
AJ Huth’s RBI single scored Allie Pringle as Kemp tied it, 3-3, in the bottom of the third inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Jackets poured on four runs thanks to a 3-run RBI single from Huth and an RBI single by Gibbons to lead 7-3.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Danica Barnett’s RBI single extended Kemp’s lead to 8-3.
The Lady Tigers cut into their deficit by plating a trio of runs in the top of the sixth and trailed 8-6.
Kemp got three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a 2-run RBI double by Autumn Riddle and Emma McAda’s RBI single.
Arp was not done yet as they started a rally in the top of the seventh. A 2-run inside-the-park home run cut it to 11-8. Then with two outs, the Lady Tigers used an RBI single and a run scoring on a wild pitch to trail 11-10. Kemp held on for the 1-run victory after an Arp flyout to right field.
Emma McAda started for Kemp and pitched all seven innings, allowing 10 runs and throwing 11 strikeouts. AJ Huth led the Lady Jacket offense with four RBIs.
