HENDERSON COUNTY ISSUES 30 DAY BURN BAN

HENDERSON COUNTY–Commissioners’ Court of Henderson County voted June 21 to impose a 30-day burn ban on the recommendation of County Fire Marshal Shane Renberg, who consulted with 22 volunteer fire chiefs across the county, all of whom favored the ban, he said.
Renberg told the court the Keetch-Byram Drought Index for the county averaged 566 and is increasing 9-13 points per day. The fire marshal said 575 is the threshold for considering a burn ban, which most of the county is “well over,” he stated.

MABANK–Firing a blistering 7-under 29 on the back nine, the team of Troy Scott (TVCC), Harold Jones (TVCC), Daniel Pierce (Cross Roads) and Brett Zamzow (Cross Roads) went on to win the 35th Annual Coaches Playday played at The Pinnacle Club June 14 in Mabank.
The winning team finished with a 10-under 62 to claim a one-stroke win. It was the third win for Scott, who also won in 2005 and 2015. It was the second win for Jones, Pierce and Zamzow. Jones had previously won in 2014 and both Pierce and Zamzow in 2020.

A few weeks ago, the Eustace Bulldogs 8U team became the local league undefeated 8U champions. As of last weekend, they are the undefeated 8U Dixie District Champions. Next up is the regional tournament June 25-27 in Kilgore.

Former Police Chief faces animal cruelty charge

HENDERSON COUNTY—In a letter from Henderson County Attorney Clint Davis and Henderson County District Attorney Jenny Palmer, they state that the former Caney City Police Chief Charles Gregory will face a charge of cruelty to animals. 
The allegation stems from a single incident that occurred April 8 where it is alleged Gregory picked up a stray dog in the city limits of Trinidad, drove it to the City of Malakoff and abandoned the dog.

GUN BARREL CITY–Voter turnout for the Gun Barrel City Mayor runoff election is beginning with a crawl. 
Early voting began June 16 and has only garnered 109 votes between the first two days of early voting, as of June 20. Voters are asked to cast their vote between candidates Linda Rankin and incumbent Mayor David Skains. 
Early voting ends Friday, June 24 with election day set for Tuesday, June 28.
