New teachers welcomed with luncheon

Mabank ISD welcomes “new to the profession” and “new to the district” teachers at its annual new teacher orientation and luncheon Aug. 9. Over 75 new educators were introduced by business and community leaders at this annual event. The new teacher luncheon has been co-hosted by Mabank ISD and the Cedar Creek Lake Chamber of Commerce for over 20 years.

Creation of Log Cabin-area ESD halted

HENDERSON COUNTY–A motion by Henderson County Precinct 4 Commissioner Mark Richardson to order a Nov. 8 election for the creation of Emergency Services District (ESD) 13 failed for the lack of a second before the Henderson County Commissioners’ Court Aug. 9.
The proposed ESD would have served the Log Cabin area. The court had voted July 12 to accept a petition to create the ESD and set Aug. 9 for a public hearing on the matter.

Johnston convicted, sentenced to life

KAUFMAN COUNTY–District Attorney Erleigh Norville Wiley announced Aug. 4, the conviction of Margaret Ann Johnston, 80, for murder, a first degree felony offense. Johnston was charged with the murder of her daughter, Connie Lynn Helms, Sept. 14, 2021 at her home in Kaufman. 
Dispatch received a 911 call shortly after 4:30 p.m. from the victim’s sister reporting that she had been on the telephone with Helms’ and had heard what she believed to be the fatal gunshot. A grand jury indicted Johnston with murder Nov. 19, 2021.
