Homicide in the City of Tool

TOOL‑ Lieutenant Jason Lee of the Tool Police Department released the following statement April 27.
The Tool Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred on the evening of April 24, 2026.
At approximately 8:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the City of Tool regarding a reported burglary in progress. The officer arrived within minutes of the call and made contact at the scene.
During the initial response, the officer encountered an armed male suspect inside the residence and an adult female victim who had sustained serious injuries. The officer immediately engaged the suspect. A physical struggle followed, during which the officer deployed his department-issued Taser and, with assistance from a nearby citizen, took the suspect into custody.
The victim, identified as Peggy Sue Mitchell, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The suspect, identified as Jeremy Carter Keene, sustained injuries during the incident and was transported by air ambulance to a regional hospital for treatment. The Officer sustained minor injuries and was evaluated following the incident.
Jeremy Carter Keene remains in custody. Charges are being reviewed in coordination with investigators and prosecutors.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Detectives are processing evidence, conducting interviews, and coordinating with assisting agencies. There is no known ongoing threat to the public at this time.
Chief Robert Walker stated, “This was a tragic and violent incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Peggy Sue Mitchell. I am thankful for the swift and courageous actions taken by the Officer under extremely dangerous circumstances. I also want to thank the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers for their immediate assistance and continued professionalism throughout this investigation.”
