Lady Jackets fall to Scurry-Rosser; Wildcats defeat Yellowjackets

KEMP–Kemp hosted the Scurry-Rosser Wildcats and Lady Wildcats Jan. 30 for a district doubleheader on the hardwood.
LADY JACKETS: With 1:35 left in the first quarter, the Lady Wildcats led 16-9. Danica Barnett sank a layup with 25 seconds left and Kemp trailed 16-11.
Barnett opened the second quarter with a three-pointer for the Lady Jackets to trail 16-14 before Peyton Billings banked a three-pointer for Scurry-Rosser to lead 19-14.
After a basket from Laura Cabo Lopez, the Lady Wildcats used an 8-0 run and led 27-16 with 3:12 left in the first half. Lopez had a layup to stop the run at 1:45 and Kemp would go into halftime trailing 27-18.
Alyssa Harrison scored four points during the Lady Wildcats’ 8-0 run to open the third quarter for the 35-18 lead. Kemp scored their first point of the period on a free throw by Barnett to trail 35-19 with five minutes.
At 37-21, Kayden Lidy, Baylen Bodiford and Makenna Bragg scored six straight as Scurry-Rosser led 43-21 going into the fourth quarter. 
The Lady Jackets scored five straight to open the fourth and trailed 43-26. At 47-26, Lopez had a field goal and Allie Pringle made one free throw as Kemp trailed 47-29 with 4:40 left to play. 
The Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Jackets the rest of the way, 11-8, as Kemp fell to Scurry-Rosser by the final score of 58-37.
JACKETS: At 3-2 early in favor of the Wildcats, Jackson Young’s basket gave Kemp their first lead at 4-3. 
De’Shawn Wren had four straight points as Scurry-Rosser led 7-4. Huston Cromer scored four straight points on a field goal and two free throws as he gave the Yellowjackets the lead back at 8-7. Jackson Bussey drained a three-pointer with 30 seconds and Scurry-Rosser would lead 10-8 after the first quarter.
With 6:30 until halftime, Kemp trailed 11-10. The Wildcats had five straight points, including a three-point play by Bussey, to lead 16-10.
Cromer scored five of the next six points as the Yellowjackets trailed 17-15 with 2:56. The Wildcats were led by Baylin Caves during an 8-2 stretch and they led Kemp, 25-17 at the break.
Wren and Bussey combined for eight straight points to open the third quarter to lead 33-17. At 35-20, Kemp outscored Scurry-Rosser, 7-2, and cut the score to 37-27 after Cromer’s three-pointer.
Wren and Jacob Holbrook made it 41-27 with 1:57 in the third quarter. After a pair of free throws by Jackson Young made it 41-29, Bussey closed the third with four points to give the Wildcats the 45-29 lead.
At 47-29, Tyler Patrick’s basket made it 47-31, but that was it as the Wildcats went on to defeat the Yellowjackets, 56-33.
