Rep. Keith Bell secures a Kaufman County win

KAUFMAN COUNTY– Representative Keith Bell is proud to announce the successful creation of the 3rd District Court, also known as the 489th Judicial District Court, in Kaufman County, a significant achievement that will enhance the local judicial system and improve access to justice for county residents. This milestone was made possible through the passage of House Bill 3474, which was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott June 13.

Henderson County enacts 28-day burn ban

HENDERSON COUNTY–Henderson County Commissioners’ Court voted to enact a burn ban starting Aug. 1, which lasts 28 days to line up with a later court meeting, which convenes weekly on Tuesdays.
County Fire Marshal Shane Renberg told the court that the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) jumped about 70 points this past week. KBDI measures items such as soil moisture, ranging from zero being totally wet to 800 representing absolutely dry conditions, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Panther volleyball thanks Coach Lyn Evans for coming and running camp. “Her knowledge of the game and experience was a great asset to our program. Our Panthers worked hard over the last three days, knocked some rust off and got better! We are proud of these ladies,” said program leaders. Tryouts began Monday and the girls play the first home game Aug. 8 against Palestine and Malakoff.

Hood sentenced to 60 years in Seven Points murder

HENDERSON COUNTY–Christopher Nelson Hood, 48, was convicted of murder in the 2021 shooting death of Brooke Spurgeon according to reports by Henderson County District Attorney Jenny Palmer.
The trial began July 18 and concluded July 24 with Hood’s conviction of Murder and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. The case was heard in the 392nd District Court by Judge Scott McKee. Palmer and Assistant District Attorney Daynah Fallwell represented the state.
