GUN BARREL CITY- Authorities say the investigation is continuing on the fatal hit and run that happened on Aug. 19, 2024, at the U.S. Highway 175 overpass spanning the State Highway 334 intersection. Which involved the death of a cross-country cyclist, 30-year-old German citizen Rick Mueller.
In a press release at that time, from Gun Barrel City Police Capt. Connie Katsoulas, Gun Barrel City Police dispatch received a 9-1-1 call regarding a man on a bicycle who was struck by a vehicle.
The 9-1-1 caller observed the vehicle, which he described as a brownish medium sized semi-truck hauling what looked to him like two shipping containers, strike the victim from behind with the front right area of the truck. He referred to the truck itself as the size of a garbage truck. The driver of the truck did not stop, continuing instead east into Eustace.
 Sept. 9, The Monitor Newspaper reached out to Katsoulas, who sent the following: 
“The investigation identified an individual in connection with the crash, and the case was submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review. The case remains under review at this time. The investigator spoke with the District Attorney’s Office yesterday (Sept. 8) and was advised that several outstanding items must be completed before the case can be presented to a grand jury.
“There is currently one outstanding item requiring action by our department, which the investigator is actively working to complete. The remaining matters involve information or actions outside of our department’s control.
“At this time, the case remains active and pending review by the District Attorney’s Office. We will continue to work with prosecutors and provide any additional information or assistance needed as the case moves forward.
“Additionally, the cyclist’s personal effects were mailed to his family, in Germany, last year.”
