County approves budget, tax rate
KAUFMAN COUNTY—During the regular meeting of the Kaufman County Commissioners Court held Sept. 10 the fiscal year budget and tax rate were approved. County Judge Jakie Allen held a public hearing during the meeting for anyone to comment on the budget and tax rate to which there were no comments. The tax rate for fiscal year 2024-25 has been set to $0.415113 which was approved and adopted by the court.
Also discussed during the meeting was a Land Purchase Agreement between Stephen E. and Vicki Davis and Kaufman County. Commissioner Pct. 2 Skeet Phillips explained that this agreement consists of three acres near Lake Ray Hubbard that will house a police substation, ambulances and CareFlite. Commissioners approved the agreement unanimously.
During the Sept. 3 meeting of commissioner’s court, commissioners heard concerns from Mr. Dyer regarding the parking of a semi-truck in the Glenn Cove neighborhood near Farm to Market (FM) Road 740. Dyer stated that he and his neighbors have a difficult time seeing around the truck to turn onto FM 740 and requested assistance from the county.
The county’s legal department informed commissioners that Kaufman County can pass an ordinance to prohibit parking on a particular street, per transportation code. However this would apply to all street parking, not just semi-trucks. Kaufman County Sheriff Bryan Beavers stated that should such an ordinance be implemented, they would need to be fair, firm and consistent which would also prohibit street parking for lawn or service provider companies as well. No action was taken, but a plan was made to make contact with the neighbor and discuss the issue.
