KEMP–The Kemp Lady Yellowjackets stayed within striking distance of the Brownsboro Bearettes Jan. 28 through the first period before Brownsboro went on a 14-3 second-period run and never looked back in a 50-22 victory.
After Brownsboro took an early 4-0 lead, Kemp’s Allie Pringle banked in a 3-pointer off the glass to get her team within 4-3. With 3:34 left in the first period, Emma Bailey drove into the lane and rolled in a basket to put Kemp ahead 5-4. Brownsboro answered soon thereafter to retake a 6-5 advantage, next adding a 3-pointer and three free throws for a 12-5 lead.
With 30 seconds left in the opening period, Bailey drove and scored a bucket, then Makayla Miller was fouled at the buzzer, sinking both free throws to get Kemp within 12-9 at the end of the first period.
In the second period, Brownsboro started with 10 unanswered points. With 3:48 remaining in the second, Miller added another free throw to get the Lady Yellowjackets within 22-10. Following four Brownsboro free throws, Miller made two free throws with 55.5 seconds left in the first half, which allowed Kemp to make it 26-12 in favor of the Bearettes at halftime.
Brownsboro opened the second half with three consecutive hoops, prompting Kemp to call timeout, now down 32-12. Then, with 4 minutes left in the third period, Kemp’s Kim Mendez stole the ball and made a basket to reduce that to 32-14. The Bearettes then ended the third period with three baskets, a free throw and then another hoop at the buzzer, all of which had them ahead 41-14.
In the fourth period, Kemp’s Paden Myers and Emma Bailey made baskets to cut the Brownsboro lead to 42-18. Bailey (who led Kemp during the game with 8 points) added two free throws with 3:45 remaining in the contest, then Mendez grabbed an offensive rebound followed by a bucket with 1:20 left in the game to close out Kemp’s scoring.
