EUSTACE—The Eustace Bulldogs baseball team opened their 2025 season with a 13-2 victory over Rice by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving new head coach Ethan Nors his first win of his coaching career as well.
To start the game, Eustace’s Carter GoDair scored the first run by crossing home plate on a wild pitch. Andric Taylor’s fielder’s choice allowed Rhett Dyer (the Bulldog starting pitcher) to score Eustace’s second run. Next, Cooper Gaddis’ 2-out single drove in Grady McLemee for a 3-0 Bulldog advantage. Talyn Smith soon followed from third base to touch home plate after another wild pitch, making Eustace’s winning margin 4-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, GoDair singled, Dyer doubled and a balk by the Rice pitcher allowed GoDair to score from third for a 5-0 Eustace advantage. In the third, Smith scored on an overthrow of third base on his steal from second to move that to 6-0.
After Rice scored one run in the top of the fourth, in the bottom of that inning, Eustace’s Jeremy Rummel reached base with a walk, then took third on an errant Rice pickoff play at first, then was singled home by GoDair to extend Eustace’s lead to 7-1.Dyer doubled home Eli Griffin (who was courtesy running for GoDair) to move that to 8-1. Next, Andric Taylor’s fielder’s choice brought home Dyer, who had moved to third, for a 9-1 Bulldog lead.
Rice got on the scoreboard once in the top of the fifth to cut the Eustace lead to 9-2, but in the bottom-half frame, Dyer singled home Griffin (again running for GoDair) and Gaddis to up the advantage to 11-2. Later, McLemee’s 2-out single drove in Dyer and Adan Maltos to end the game early by run-ruling Rice with 13 plate-crossings.
