CEDAR CREEK LAKE–Mabank, Eustace, Kemp and Malakoff high schools’ girls’ powerlifting competitors are scheduled to show their stuff at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Meet in Edinburg March 13-14, following their respective Regional Meets.
A lifter who qualifies for the Regional Meet may qualify for the State Meet by either finishing first or second in her weight class, by posting a qualifying total for her weight class or by qualifying within the “top two rule by classification,” according to the THSWPA 2025 general rules of competition.
For Mabank (which will compete March 14 in Edinburg and which as a team finished fifth at the Class 4A Large School Regional), Lindsey Cope won the gold medal in the 123-pound weight class at her school’s Regional Meet, held Feb. 27 at Longview Pine Tree High School. Cope had a 295-pound squat, a 165-pound bench press and a 290-pound dead lift to total 750 pounds. Callie Riley took home a silver medal in the 132-pound weight class, with a 335-pound squat, a 225-pound bench press and a 245-pound dead lift, totaling 805 pounds.
In the 198-pound weight class, Fernanda Soria of Mabank had a 295-pound squat, a 165-pound bench press and a 270-pound dead lift to total 730 pounds, which won a silver medal. Also, in the 132-pound weight class, Mabank’s Amber Huggins (who brought home a bronze medal) had a qualifying total of 775 pounds, which featured a 295-pound squat, a 145-pound bench press and a 335-pound dead lift. Julie Vinson also represented Mabank at the Regional Meet.
For Kemp (who as a team finished eighth at the Feb. 27 Class 4A Small School Regional Meet at Longview Pine Tree High School), Tammy Green advances to the March 14 State Meet in Edinburg. Green, who competes in the 220-pound weight class, had a 365-pound squat, a 190-pound bench press and a 355-pound dead lift at the Regional. Other Kemp powerlifters at the Regional included Tessa Roseberry, Lillie Moore and Bree Hall.
For Eustace (which placed No. 11 as a team at the March 1 Class 3A Large School Regional Meet at Commerce High School), Grace Holland and Gena Hamilton posted qualifying totals and advance to March 13’s State Meet in Edinburg.
Hamilton (in the 132-pound weight class) finished in third place with a qualifying total of 780 pounds, which included a 290-pound squat, a 195-pound bench press and a 295-pound dead lift. For Holland (who was fourth in the 220-pound weight class), her state qualifying total equaled 910 pounds, which included a 390-pound squat, a 195-pound bench press and a 325-pound dead lift.
Other Eustace qualifiers for the Regional Meet were Rylie Redden (who finished in fourth place in the 114-pound weight class), Jocelyn Massey and Skyler Skinner.
Malakoff’s powerlifting team, which finished No. 8 at the March 1 Class 3A Large School Regional Meet in Commerce, is sending two powerlifters to the March 13 State Meet in Edinburg: Dailynn Jackson and Whitley Yard, both of whom won silver medals at the Regional.
Jackson competed in the 165-pound weight class in Commerce, posting a total of 820 pounds. Broken down, that includes a 330-pound squat, a 160-pound bench press and a 330-pound dead lift. Yard, lifting in the 242-plus pound weight class, had a 300-pound squat, a 190-pound bench press and a 290-pound dead lift to total 780 pounds.
Other Malakoff qualifiers at the Regional Meet were Lili Whitaker, Stormy Black, Makayla Dunn, Annel Duran Garcia and Abigail Jones. In addition, Kerens High School’s Jayden Brumit competed in the Class 1A/2A Regional Championship at Commerce High School Feb. 28.
Texas high school boys’ powerlifting, which is overseen by the Texas High School Powerlifting Association, will hold their State Meet at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene March 21-22. State qualifiers from Division 2 and 3 will lift March 21, while State qualifiers from Divisions 1 and 4 will compete March 22. Their Regional Meets were held Feb. 24, March 1, March 4 and March 6-8.
