The Kemp Lady Jackets 10U softball team includes Carsyn Moreno (front row, from left), Emarie Steakley, Emmilou Miller, Emma Ocanas, Daisy Hutchins and Montgomery Bednar, along with Shyanna Peters (middle row, from left), Cheyenne Trammell, Kylee Ellison, Brooklynn Wren, Harper Rankin and Harlem Saillings, as well as coaches Carlos Moreno (rear row, from left), Chris Miller and Mikie Rankin.

KEMP–The Kemp Lady Jackets have been turning heads this season with their relentless determination and impressive performance across two age divisions within the Cedar Creek Baseball and Softball Association. Not only did they dominate the 10U division with a perfect 8-0 record, but they’ve also risen to the challenge of playing up in the 12U division (against which the team also scheduled games)—where they remained undefeated at 4-0.
What sets this team apart isn’t just the wins, but the work ethic behind them. Rain or shine, freezing cold or scorching heat, these girls show up ready to work. Their commitment during the offseason laid the foundation for their success, and it’s that level of dedication that makes this team truly special.
Coach Carlos Moreno emphasized that this season, the focus has gone far beyond physical skill—it’s been about building mental toughness. “One of our biggest goals has been helping the girls learn to control their emotions,” he shared. “We constantly talk about playing your part—whether you’re in the field or cheering from the dugout, everyone has something to contribute. You’re not going to be perfect every game, and we don’t expect you to be. What matters most is how you respond. It’s about bouncing back and fighting through the tough moments—that’s what makes a great player.”
Moreno added that fellow Coach Chris Miller often talks about finding out who has the dog in them. “That means we want to know who’s ready to scratch and claw, to dig deep when it counts, and to do whatever it takes to reach our goal. That mentality—that fight—is what makes this team special.”
The Lady Jackets recently capped off their regular season by competing in the end-of-season tournament—and they didn’t disappoint by winning three games in that tournament. The girls battled hard and came away with first place, completing the tournament—and their regular season—undefeated with a perfect 15-0 record.
But the 2025 season isn’t over yet. The Lady Jackets are now gearing up for the next big challenge as they travel June 13 to Malakoff to compete in district play (where they will play within Diamond Youth Softball’s District 6), where the top two teams will advance to the Regional Finals in Center, located in Deep East Texas. With momentum, grit and heart on their side, the Lady Jackets are ready to keep pushing and prove once again why they’re a team to watch.
