Panthers fall late to Lindale Eagles

MABANK–The Mabank Panthers continued District 15-4A play at home Jan. 13 against the Lindale Eagles, losing 51-46.
Carter Sims got it started for Mabank with his 3-pointer for an early Panther lead. The Eagles took a 4-3 lead before baskets by Luke Carter and Angel Guerrero allowed Mabank to go back in front 7-4. After a free throw by Lindale’s Reed Carnathan, Carter made consecutive field goals to put the Panthers up 11-5 at the end of the first quarter.
The Panthers led 14-9 before Carter, Brody Stephen and Sims combined for an 8-0 run to extend the Mabank lead to 22-9 with 4:32 left in the first half. However, Carnahan scored five of Lindale’s points in a 7-2 run to cut Mabank’s lead to 24-16 at halftime.
Sims and Cullen McFaul opened the third quarter for Mabank with consecutive baskets to build the Panther lead to 28-16. With 4:14 left in the third quarter, the Panther advantage was 31-23 before Sims scored all of Mabank’s 6-3 stretch to extend that to 37-26.
At 38-28, Lindale’s Dayne Edens had consecutive 3-point plays to cut their deficit to 38-34 with 47 seconds left in the third quarter. Carter’s field goal gave the Panthers a 40-34 cushion going into the fourth quarter.
Two free throws from Edens and a layup by Carnathan opened the fourth quarter to allow Lindale to trail by 2 points, at 40-38, with 6 minutes left in the game. Carter’s Mabank basket made it 42-38 before 4-straight points by Carnathan tied it at 42-42 with 4:09 left, then Logan Coker’s field goal gave the Eagles the 44-42 lead with 3:44 to go.
The Panthers tied the game at 44-44 before a free throw by Coker and a layup by Carnathan gave Lindale a 47-44 lead with 1:07 remaining. Sims’ basket cut it to 47-46 but Coker’s field goal re-extended Lindale’s lead to 49-46 with 38 seconds left. After a timeout with 21 seconds on the clock, the Panthers had a chance to tie it with a 3-point basket, but Carnathan made a steal and Evan Cockrell iced the game with his basket as Lindale held off the Panthers by the score of 51-46.
Mabank next visited the Kemp Yellowjackets that Friday (Jan. 16) for another rendition of the neighboring schools’ rivalry.
