MABANK—The Kemp Yellowjackets and Mabank Panthers met for the second and final time in the 2026 regular season Feb. 10 for a District 15-4A matchup on the court at Mabank High School.
During the 37-point win, Mabank senior superstar Luke Carter surpassed 2,000 career points, all while playing in Class 4A, which his head coach (and father) Tracy Carter says is a "pretty neat feat."
Carter, who led the Panthers on the night with 27 points, scored the first 5 points of the contest, which included a field goal and 3-pointer, giving Mabank an opening 5-0 lead. Kemp answered with a basket courtesy of Preston Sullivan, trailing 5-2. Next, Cullen McFaul and Carter Sims both had 3 points for Mabank during a 6-0 stretch as the Panthers built their lead to 11-2.
Zaki Brown’s Yellowjacket 3-pointer trimmed the score to 11-5 with 3:48 left in the first quarter. Carter then had 5 points in an ensuing 10-0 Panther run to extend Mabank's lead to 21-5. At 22-7, Sims scored the next 4 points as the Panthers now led 26-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Angel Lara's Mabank free throw made it 28-7 before Jake Tucker of Kemp hit a 3-pointer, then Kemp's Kaysen Stevenson’s free throw cut the Mabank lead to 28-11 with 6:07 left until halftime. Brody Stephen’s 3-pointer and Sims’ free throw extended the Panther advantage to 32-11 with 3:14 remaining before the half. Sullivan cut it to 32-13 for Kemp before the Panther duo of Carter and and McFaul made single free throws to increase the Mabank halftime lead to 34-13. The Panthers outscored the Yellowjackets 20-6 in the third quarter to lead 54-19 to go into the final quarter.
Next up, both teams play Friday, Feb. 13, as the Panthers host District-leading Athens in their Senior Night home finale, which Coach Carter calls pivotal for the playoffs. The Yellowjackets travel to Van that same night. Both games tip off about 7:30 p.m.
