Alma Allene Sutton, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and dedicated educator, passed away Jan. 27, 2024. She was born Jan. 28, 1932, in Cross Roads to Colonel and Willie Turlington.
Allene completed her education in Cross Roads, attending both elementary and high school there. She then pursued her passion for learning and graduated from East Texas State University in Commerce.
On June 22, 1951, Allene married the love of her life, Eddie Sutton at Oak Cliff Baptist Church. They were blessed with sons Richard and Steve and were happily married for 57 years until Eddie’s passing in 2008.
Allene dedicated herself to a career as an educator, making a lasting impact on the lives of countless children.
She was the first kindergarten teacher at Mabank ISD and taught for 28 years. Allene’s dedication and exceptional teaching skills earned her the Teacher of the Year award at Lakeview Elementary during the 2000-2001 school year.
Even after retirement, her love for teaching led her back to Lakeview for two more years. Allene cherished each and every one of her students and considered them “her kids.”
Outside of her career, Allene actively participated in various community and social organizations. She was a proud member of the Spanish Shores Senora’s Club for over 30 years and the Mabank Halcyon Club for over 40 years. Allene served as the president of the Halcyon Club during the years 1987-1988 and 2003-2004.
She also had a passion for bowling and enjoyed both traditional and virtual bowling on the Wii. Allene was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Mabank.
Above all, Allene cherished time spent with her family. Christmas, a cherished tradition, held a special place in her heart as she loved having her kids and their families gathered together. Whether it was cooking out, sitting by the lake or simply sharing quality time, Allene’s love for her family knew no bounds.
Allene was preceded by her beloved husband, son Richard Sutton, sisters Lorene Cliver and husband O.V., Nelda Washam, Helen Chalk and Hazel Fults and husband James, her parents, Jeanne Sutton and Joshua Sutton of Oakwood.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving son Steven Sutton and wife Kristi of Mabank. Honey adored her grandchildren Kandace Hass and husband Aaron of Richardson, and Lindsay Perez and husband Nolberto of Greenville. She treasured her great-grandchildren Asher, Harper, Felix and Eddie. Allene is also survived by her brother-in-law M.L. “Tubby” Washam of Kaufman, Bill Chalk of Dallas, nieces and nephews Robert (Ed) Cliver and wife Jo Ann of Tyler, Kelly Nallie of Lufkin, Jim Johnson and wife Kris of Ohio, and Janet Johnson of Forney. Additionally, she leaves behind several grandnieces, grandnephews and their families.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate employees of Hospice Plus and The Lodge of Gun Barrel for their exceptional care.
Funeral services were held Feb. 2, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Mabank, officiated by Chaplin Donald Kile. A graveside service followed at Post Oak Bend Cemetery in Crossroads.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the March of Dimes, a cause that was close to Allene’s heart.
