EUSTACE–The Eustace Bulldogs found themselves in early and late deficits Sept. 19 versus Quitman on homecoming night, with the Bulldogs finding sparks to creep back in the game but coming up short both times, losing 40-28.
After being behind 13-0 late in the first half, Eustace got on the scoreboard with a 7-yard quarterback keeper by Ethan Marquez. Mason Patek put over the extra point to cut the Bulldog deficit to 13-7 with 1:37 remaining in the first half.
Quitman scored an early second-half touchdown to take a 21-7 lead, which included a 2-point conversion run after a Eustace penalty on the Quitman extra-point attempt. Soon thereafter, Marquez found Hudson Smith from the Bulldog 42-yard line, with Smith turning on the jets to go unchallenged into the end zone. Just 16 seconds after Quitman had scored, Eustace cut the visitors’ lead to 21-14.
Next, after Eustace’s offense turned the ball over on downs deep in their own territory, Quitman seized the opportunity and marched for a touchdown, taking a 27-14 advantage (Eustace blocked the extra point) with 1:31 remaining in the third quarter.
Quitman scored again with 8:40 left in the game for a 34-14 lead, which Eustace answered when running back Presten Sy (who carried six times for 87 yards on the night) dashed 35 yards for a touchdown. Along with Patek’s extra-point kick, Eustace was back within 34-21 with 7:11 left in the contest.
Quitman tacked on another touchdown (the extra point was missed) for a 40-21 lead at the 2:30 mark of the fourth quarter. Marquez then threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Smith with 25 seconds left in the game to account for the final score.
