First quarter struggles sink ’Jackets against Eagles

KEMP–The Kemp Yellowjackets dropped their fourth straight district contest to the Fairfield Eagles at home Oct. 21.
The Eagles clawed the ’Jackets early as they scored 21 points in the first quarter on their way to a 49-21 win over Kemp.
The Eagles opened the scoring on a long 55-yard touchdown catch with 7:18 remaining in the first quarter a long opening-drive by the ’Jackets came up empty. 
Fairfield added another long touchdown pass on a 58-yard dart to increase their lead to 14-0 with 2:25 left in the first quarter.
The Eagles added one more score in the opening 12 minutes as they led 21-0 entering the second quarter.
Kemp did score a touchdown in each of the last three quarters, but it wasn’t enough as their defense was overwhelmed by the Eagles.
The three lone touchdowns came courtesy of Brayden Gibbons, Daron Brown and Tyler Patrick.
Deacon Thompson led the way for Kemp with 14 carries for 106 yards as well as going 11/21 for 134 passing yards and two touchdown passes against Fairfield.
The loss drops Kemp to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in district play as the ’Jackets have just two games remaining in their 2022 season. 
Kemp battles Teague (4-4) in their upcoming road district contest Oct. 28 before finishing out their season at home against the Eustace Bulldogs (2-6) Nov. 4.
