KEMP–The Kemp Yellowjackets won their second game in a row after beating the A-Plus Academy Knights Sept. 17 in non-District play, a game during which three Kemp runners each gained more than 100 yards rushing.
Kemp led 8-0 with 7:15 to go in the first quarter. Then, with 1:03 remaining in the opening period, Kemp’s Easton Whiteley intercepted A-Plus quarterback Diego Soto in the red zone, but Yellowjackets running back Zaki Brown fumbled the ball on the next play for the Kemp offense, which the Knights recovered.
Early in the second quarter, Hayden Olivarez of the Yellowjackets’ defense recoverd an A-Plus fumble which stemmed from a quarterback sack. With 8:59 left until halftime, Olivarez scored on a 5-yard touchdown run and it was 14-0 Yellowjackets after a failed 2-point conversion.
Later, Kemp’s defense forced a turnover on downs at A-Plus’ 44-yard line with 6:26 to go in the first half. Brown eventually rushed for an 8-yard touchdown and he caught a Santiago Avila pass for the 2-point conversion to enable Kemp to extend their lead to 22-0 with 4:20 remaining until the break. Soon after, Kemp’s Brown intercepted a Soto pass and returned the ball all the way to the Knights’ 20. Two plays later, Riley Roberson hit paydirt with a 9-yard touchdown run and Brown helped complete another 2-point conversion, which made it 30-0 in favor of Kemp with 3:46 left until the half.
At the 1:42 mark of the second quarter, the Kemp defense stymied an A-Plus drive after a Knights running back, Cameron Cofield, fumbled the ball, which Roberson recovered. The Knights finally punched through to score before the break with Trasean Williams’ 34-yard touchdown catch. After a failed 2-point conversion attempt, A-Plus trailed Kemp 30-6 at halftime and went on to be outscored 20-6 by the Yellowjackets in the second half on the way to Kemp’s 50-12 victory, which improved the Yellowjackets’ record to 2-2.
The three Kemp runners who led the Avila-quarterbacked Yellowjackets offense were Roberson (111 yards on 15 carries for a per-rush average of 7.4 yards, with a longest run of 35 yards), Brown (110 yards from 12 carries, which averages 9.2 yards per rush, and which includes a longest run of 37 yards) and Olivarez (18 carries totaling 108 yards, which is 6 yards per carry, and a longest run of 24 yards).
Whiteley led the Yellowjackets’ defense with eight tackles, two of which were solo. Whiteley also had half a quarterback sack (Glynn Christopher was credited with the other half) and had 12 assists. Roberson turned in 3.5 tackles, of which one was solo and 1.5 led to a loss of yardage for A-Plus, along with five assists. Sidney Buchanan, Brown and Olivarez each forced one fumble for Kemp.
