CORSICANA–The Malakoff Tigers took their first step toward the State title game with a 49-0 trouncing of the Maypearl Panthers during a driving rainstorm on a cool Nov. 9 night at Corsicana’s Tiger Field.
After winning the Bi-District championship, the 11-0 Tigers are scheduled to play the 8-3 Mount Vernon Tigers Friday, Nov. 17 at Rose Stadium in Tyler in the Area round of the playoffs. Mount Vernon beat Gladewater 49-7 in their Nov. 10 Bi-District game.
Malakoff opened its scoring with a 38-yard Jerrion Hall touchdown run with 8:31 left in the first quarter. Chauncey Hogg added a reverse end-around 30-yard touchdown with 4:48 remaining in the opening quarter, which increased the Malakoff lead to 14-0.
With 8:25 left in the second quarter, Hall added another touchdown run, this time from 12 yards out, to give Malakoff a 21-0 advantage. An 18-yard misdirection pass from Tiger quarterback Mike Jones to Evan Loper just before halftime gave Malakoff a 28-0 intermission edge.
Parker Poteete had a 19-yard touchdown catch with 7:50 left in the third quarter (35-0, Malakoff), James Studley picked up a Maypearl fumble in Panther territory and returned it 26 yards for a Tiger touchdown (42-0, Malakoff) and Jones added a 3-yard quarterback keeper touchdown with 6:11 left in the game for the Tigers’ 49-0 victory.
The Tigers totaled 466 yards of offense, led by Jones’ 221 yards through the air, completing 78% of his passes. Hall gained 121 yards on the ground with 12 carries while Hogg caught eight passes for 107 yards.
