MALAKOFF–The Malakoff Tigers overcame a third-quarter deficit against the Teague Lions Oct. 7 with two of three Jason Tennyson touchdown runs to take a 32-18 win that improved the Tigers’ record to 6-1 and 3-0 in district.
Malakoff won its fifth game in a row and is ranked No. 5 in the state for Class 3A, Division 2 by Texas Football’s Oct. 10 poll. The Tigers scored initially on a drive that had two fourth-down conversions, the first on fourth-and-four with a 16-yard Mike Jones to Chauncey Hogg pass and the second with a Damien Jackson run from the three-yard line on fourth-and-two. Jackson cashed in for a touchdown on the next play from one yard out, putting Malakoff ahead 7-0 with 8:08 left in the first quarter.
Malakoff took advantage of a short field on its next scoring drive, starting at the Teague 36-yard line and helped by a 15-yard personal foul penalty against the Lions. Tennyson ran for his first touchdown from eight yards away to propel Malakoff to a 14-0 lead with 6:26 remaining in the first quarter.
Teague showed signs of life with a 66-yard run to the Malakoff 16-yard line, but that drive ended with a failed 27-yard Lion field goal attempt at the 4:07 mark of the first quarter. The Lions later stopped a Malakoff fourth-and-three attempt at Teague’s own 28-yard line with 17 seconds left in the first quarter. The Lions capped the ensuing drive with a 47-yard touchdown pass on third-and-13 but missed the extra point, leaving the score at 14-6 with 11:07 left in the second quarter.
Malakoff attempted to convert a fourth-and-five from the Teague 23-yard line, but the pass was intercepted and run back 70 yards to the Tiger 15-yard line. On third-and-11, Teague scored with a 16-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion attempt failed yet the Lions moved closer at 14-12 with 2:51 left before halftime. Malakoff marched for a 27-yard Juan Gonzalez field goal with 1:11 left before halftime to increase the Tiger advantage to 17-12.
Teague took an 18-17 lead in the second half with a five-yard quarterback keeper touchdown run at the 8:32 mark of the third quarter, missing the extra-point kick. Malakoff’s next scoring drive moved from the Tiger 12 and finished with Tennyson’s second touchdown run, this time for 17 yards. Tennyson also successfully ran for a two-point conversion, which gave Malakoff the lead again at 25-18, with 16 ticks left in the third quarter. Tennyson put the game out of reach with his third touchdown run from three yards out with 7:42 left in the game.
